The Personal Side
But, let’s face it, when you hire a speaker/facilitator for your next meeting, you are hiring more than an expert or a good communicator, you are hiring a person. That’s why we thought it would be a good idea to share just a bit about the personal side of Sondra Thiederman.
So, what is Sondra about?
Sondra is about helping others fulfill their potential. This shows most obviously in Sondra’s desire to reduce unconscious bias in the workplace. It is those biases that all-too-often reduce a person’s opportunities to contribute to their full potential.
It also shows in her efforts as a volunteer puppy raiser for Canine Companions for Independence. You can see here a picture of Tilly, one of the ten dogs she has raised for the organization. As you can see from the setting, Tilly is at work assisting an abused child to testify in court.
The Mission of Canine Companions is to enhance the lives of people with disabilities and, in turn, increase their ability to live full and productive lives.
Sondra is about honoring the past. Passionate about antiques, old buildings, and the peculiarities of history (ask her who was Queen Victoria’s least-favorite offspring and she can probably tell you), Sondra also believes we have much to learn about how to create inclusive workplaces by examining the successes and failures of the past.
Sondra is about talking things out. Sondra believes in the importance of open and respectful conversation about unconscious bias. Even though such conversations can be awkward and uncomfortable, she believes that, with a little bit of courage, that dialogue can serve as an important first step to creating truly inclusive workplaces.
